Londoner #393 | No Mo - finding purpose in music: one student's story

No Mo first discovered music through the piano, encouraged by his teacher to try out classical pieces by Beethoven and Czerny. At the beginning, the chords felt clumsy, the sound awkward. But with guidance and practice, he began to unlock the flow of harmony and the connections within the music. What surprised him most was the bond he formed with his teacher, Mr. Hamish. “At first, I didn’t think we would get along,” he recalls. “But I love this teacher, man. He’s always helped me. He’s good at teaching me.” As he grew more confident, No Mo found his way into electronic music. Nearly a year into producing, he began crafting dark, urban beats—slow, steady instrumentals marked by a four-on-the-floor rhythm and the eerie tick of a clock. For him, beat-making became more than sound. “Before I started music, I used to get in a little trouble,” he admits. “Now I feel more at home making beats.” With music, No Mo found calm and focus, a space away from trouble and a way to express the kindness he feels isn’t always recognised. Grateful for the second chances he has been given, he is preparing to move on to college with only one goal: to keep creating music. For No Mo, making beats is more than a hobby. It is a home, a release, and a future he is determined to build. This film is part of a SEND series, funded by Wandsworth Council as part of the Liberty Festival and London Borough of Culture.
