Londoner #392 | Chris - finding freedom through running: Chris’s story

Chris was born with a vision impairment, with only a small amount of sight during childhood. By his mid-teens, he had lost his sight completely, an experience his family had anticipated, but one that still reshaped daily life. While his brother and sister rode bikes and played freely, Chris had to find his own way of navigating the world, often on edge about what he might bump into or trip over. For years, physical activity felt out of reach. That changed when a gym instructor asked Chris if he’d ever considered running outdoors. At first, he resisted the idea, it seemed unsafe. But with the support of guide runners, he took the leap. Starting with short, gentle runs, he discovered not only that it was possible, but that he loved it. Then, in 2016, an unexpected email invited him to compete in the Budapest Marathon. The challenge was daunting, he had never imagined running such a distance, but he embraced the opportunity with the same spirit that had carried him through earlier hurdles. For Chris, running with a guide is more than exercise. It’s a release, a way to switch off and feel free, knowing he’s safe in someone else’s hands. What began as a tentative step on a treadmill has grown into a passion that continues to push him forward, stride by stride.
