Clapham Junction’s Aviation Secret: Hilda Hewlett’s Factory Story

This short animation tells the remarkable true story of Hilda Hewlett, Britain’s first licensed female pilot and the pioneering aeroplane factory she co-founded in Battersea. Between 1912 and 1914, 2–16 Vardens Road, just around the corner from Clapham Junction, was home to Hewlett and Blondeau, an aeroplane factory producing ten different aircraft models during the early days of British aviation. Hilda Hewlett, the daughter of a Vauxhall vicar, had a passion for speed, engineering, and independence. By 1905, she’d already been fined twice for driving too fast, and by 1906 she was the mechanic for the only female driver in the Lands End to John O’Groats rally. In 1909, she travelled to France to learn to fly and became the first British woman to earn a pilot’s licence. Not one to slow down, she opened one of England’s first flying schools, entered aviation competitions, all while defying gender norms in skirts and curls and later launched her own aircraft manufacturing business. This London-based film celebrates Hilda’s forgotten legacy and the extraordinary role Battersea played in Britain’s aviation history.
