Rita Returns: A Battersea Power Station Story, 10 Years On

A Decade Later: Returning to Battersea Power Station

Ten years ago, 1000 Londoners interviewed Rita, a charismatic Londoner who once worked at the iconic Battersea Power Station.

As part of our Nine Elms: Past and Present series, Rita’s story became a powerful snapshot of a community in transition. This month, we’re proud to launch a brand-new film, revisiting her life and legacy, capturing her return to the very site that shaped her early years. Funded by Quadrant Estates and with thanks to Battersea Power Station.

From Freedom Street to Battersea Power Station

Originally discovered through a Wandsworth community meeting, Rita immediately stood out. She grew up just a stone’s throw away on Freedom Street and worked at Battersea Power Station when it was still a vital part of London’s industrial heartbeat. Rita's original interview in 2015 revealed a playful, cheeky spirit with a deep connection to her past — from sneaking up one of the chimneys to supporting the local community.

Since then, her story has blossomed into something extraordinary. She’s become a familiar face at the Battersea Power station’s events, voiced a nostalgic telephone box installation, and even met the King during a royal visit.

Revisiting the Power Station: A Moment of Reflection

In 2024, we reunited with Rita to film a follow-up documentary, this second chapter captures a genuine moment of emotion and pride.

As she pointed to the exact chimney she once climbed, there was a clear sense of awe and nostalgia. For our team, it was an honour to witness something so heartfelt, a full-circle moment in the truest sense.

Nine Elms: Past and Present – A Series Documenting Change

Rita’s story is part of a larger body of work: Nine Elms: Past and Present, a documentary series by Chocolate Films. The series explores the transformation of Nine Elms, one of London’s fastest-changing districts, through the eyes of those who lived and worked there, before and after redevelopment.

Once known as London’s engine room, Nine Elms has evolved from an industrial zone to a modern city hub. With over 22,000 new homes, the arrival of Apple’s HQ, the US Embassy, and two new Underground stations, it’s now a symbol of regeneration. Yet, the heart of the community remains in stories like Rita’s.

Preserving Local Voices Through Film

We believe in the power of storytelling to preserve the spirit of place. Our relationship with Rita, from her first interview to her role within the Battersea community, is a testament to the power of conversation, relationships and how this builds a community.

Want to see how London has changed through the eyes of someone who’s lived it? Watch Rita’s revisited film now on the 1000 Londoners website and discover more powerful voices from Nine Elms and beyond.
