Peter is a professional clarinettist with a foothold in the classical music scene of London, having played on most of our big stages. He’s a cultured chap, with cultured tastes; classical music, real ale and Victorian history.

Questions & Answers

  • What's your first memory of London? Moving down as a postgrad and walking around South Kensington, it was great. It was totally different to being a tourist.
  • What do you miss when you're away from London? Coming back from a trip to Mumbai, it's even crazier there! There's some amazing buildings and architecture in London.
  • What's your favourite neighbourhood? I've lived in Chiswick for 2 years, it's green and peaceful. It feels like you're not in a capital city.
  • What's your favourite building? Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. The ingenuity of medieval architects was astounding.
  • What's your ideal day out in London? A walk round Covent Garden, looking at the shops and soaking up the atmosphere in the West End.
  • What's your ideal night out in London? With friends in a cosy local pub with a log fire and real ale.
  • What's your most hated building? I'm not prejudiced. Every building is there for a reason. Old next to new is good. Variety is the story of London.
  • What's the best view in London? Not been up the Shard, but Hungerford Bridge is a good one. You can see St Pauls in the distance.
  • What's your favourite open space? I studied next to Hyde Park so maybe there, I also like the open spaces along the Thames, like in Hammersmith near the Dove pub. It's nice to sit there with a book on a summers day.
  • What's the most interesting shop? Howarth of London, it’s a shop for woodwind instruments.
  • What's your favourite place to hang out? My own flat in front of the telly, watching whatever's on, but not the X Factor or anything portraying the music business in a bad light.
  • What's been your most memorable night out in London? After a great concert there's usually something fun happening, its good to wind down.
  • Where would you take someone visiting from out of town? Houses of Parliament or Trafalgar Square to take care of their touristic curiosity, and then the south bank to show them where I've played.
  • What's the worst journey you've had to make in London? All of them! Back from Heathrow took 2 hours to get to Hammersmith. The suitcases were a nightmare.
  • What's your personal London landmark? I dont know, I've lived here long enough to not need a landmark to get around.
  • Who's your favourite fictional Londoner? Oliver Twist, the history in the book is vivid, its imaginative and realistic.
  • What's your favourite London film, book or documentary? The London locations in Skyfall are great. The scene in the Bourne Ultimatum at Waterloo with Paddy Considine was great.
  • If you could travel to any time period in London, past or future, where would you go? As many as I could, maybe 150 years ago. 1870s high Victorian society. The music being written in that time would have made it an exciting place to be. Communications were becoming easier then, so to stay informed would have made it fun. Mahler, Debussy, Brahms were all in their prime and filtering through to London.
  • For you, who is the ultimate Londoner? Samuel Pepys because he was a documentarian of the time he lived.
