1000 Londoners at Phoenix Festival

Last Saturday, Chocolate Films headed over to Phoenix Festival in Forster Memorial Park to bring the 1000 Londoners project to the local area. The Phoenix Festival celebrates young people in the community by showcasing young people’s skills, interests and anything they have to offer. We wanted to give the festival go-ers the opportunity to get involved with 1000 Londoners and contribute to the unique digital portrait of our city.

Despite the occasional downpour, nobody was deterred and the fun continued steadfastly throughout the day. We collected many stories from the local community in the Phoenix area, which includes Bellingham, Downham and Whitefoot and may have even found some potential Londoners to document for the series! People turned up in great numbers to get involved with our animation activities and video booth. The staff of Phoenix Festival were a huge support and we are very grateful to them for making it such an outstanding success.

When everyone heard about the project, they were very keen to get involved. There were people from all ages joining in. From kids in costume and puppeteers to the winner of the local talent show and a lady who had lived in the local area for 48 years; everyone warmed to the project and took part. We even had a couple of producers from London 360 come along to document the event and step up to the spotlight in our video booth.

We heard some fascinating stories from the local community including a young boy who was very enthusiastic to talk about his Tourette syndrome. It turned out that his mother was a documentary maker herself so we told her about how she could get directly involved in the project and submit her own documentary about her son.

The films produced in our pop-up studio will be available to watch on our website in the near future. We will of course be making films about some of the Londoners we met at the Phoenix festival so don’t forget to look out for those on 1000londoners.com. Sign up to our newsletter or follow us on Facebook/Twitter to make sure you don’t miss out!
