Arriving at Waterloo Station on my own on the 4th of January 1956, aged nineteen, having left Capetown, South Africa, where I was born and bred in Johannesburg, by ship for the 14 day journey to Southampton docks. I took a taxi to Earls Court where I stayed in a bed and breakfast hotel.
